Join our caring community
The Residence is always looking for people with a heart of gold and a smile that can light up a room! We rely on more than 300 carefully chosen and trained volunteers who provide 29,000+ hours of palliative care per year.
Our incredible volunteers assist with every non-medical aspect of care, from greeting families and delivering meals, to spending time with patients and supporting grieving families.

Together, our efforts help terminally ill patients live their final days in comfort and with dignity in a warm, home-like environment, close to their family, and in their community.

After years of fundraising and construction, the West Island Palliative Care Residence first opened its doors in October, 2002. The purpose-built Residence had 9 private beds, and was the first facility of its kind on the island of Montreal .
In accordance with the recommendation from the Ministry of Health and Social Services of 1 palliative bed per 10,000 population, the Residence added 14 additional beds in April 2012 on a dedicated floor of a long-term care facility nearby - the Stillview Pavilion.
June 2018 marked a defining moment for the future of the West Island Palliative Care Residence. Hundreds of supporters and employees of the Residence came together to celebrate the start of construction to consolidate its two separate locations into a single, expanded facility housing all of its 23 beds under one roof. The Capital Campaign<4.x> was established to raise the required $12.5M.
The entire palliative care community of greater Montreal, Canada and beyond mourns the loss of our leader, Teresa Dellar, from a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 58, on August 19, 2019. Read more about Teresa’s incredible contribution to end-of-life care in the news<anchor below> and in our biography.
In 2020, we renamed the Residence in honour of our co-founder, Teresa Dellar. Teresa was a shining light in the West Island community, and we will continue to honour her memory in everything we do.

Focusing on life
The families who come to us tell us over and over how meaningful each gesture, each word, each hand on the shoulder has been for them. They say that these moments, as well as knowing that their loved one could not have been better cared for, helped them in their grief. We feel extremely privileged to walk alongside our patients’ last journey.
We have hosted numerous special activities and celebrations over the years, including weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries — even a Christmas celebration in October (snow included!).
We take the ordinary and make it extraordinary.
